3D TV Research

The European Union supports 3D TV! The EU is founding a European research consortium called the multinational 3DTV network. The 3DTV consortium was created in 2004 and consists of about 200 researchers in seven countries. The consortium is headed by Prof Levent Onural at Bilkent University in Turkey, he says 'we think that there will be huge interest from the movie-goers'. The 3D consortium is researching all kind of 3D TV features and technology, including capturing 3D motion scenes, computerised representation of objects and transmission and display of 3D images.

Stereoscopic 3D TV

The consortium predicts that 3D TV will be commonplace in homes and cinemas in about three years. The 3D image will be displayed by the stereoscopic 3D technology and viewers will be given the impression of depth without wearing any 3D glasses! Stereoscopic 3D TV is considered a lower-end technology that have been around for decades but the resent development has reduced unpleasant motion sickness.

Holographic 3D TV

The 3DTV consortium is already researching holographic 3D TV, which technology is not in place yet. Prof Onural is predicting that it will take 10 to 20 years before holgraphic 3D TV is sold in the stores, but that it will be worth the wait because it will be the ultimate viewing experience. Just imagine a football game where the players are holographic 3D images moving around on the coffee table...
