Newsight (former Optically/X3D Technologies) has developed a glasses-free three-dimensional television format. Together wit Grundig and 3D Image Processing (3D IP) Newsight succeded earlier this year in capturing live video and streaming it through an autostereoscopic 3D display system in real time. This is important because prior to this 3D content had been limited to a post-production process of the material. This new breakthrough will enable directly transmitted live television in fully HD 3D TV. Before this live TV like a sporting event was simply not 3D TV compatible.
The IFA has always been important when new technologies are to be presented and this step from 2D TV to 3D TV is compared with the transition from black-and-white TV to color TV! Many involved in the TV industry think that 3D TV will now finally be cash-machine everyone wants to buy!
The Newsight 3D TV format captures HD TV in 3D with a single stereo-camera (1920x1080). This means two improvements over the old technology - firstly only one instead of several cameras is used. Secondly there are no need to delay the capturing process to manufacture the 3D content because the camera captures the 3D content right away!
The converter chip is the secret technology of the company 3D-IP (3D Image Processing) and is called the Black Betty. When the stereo-camera has captured the images the two data streams is sent through this converter chip which in real-time creates eight stereo views. This is then shown on a modified Grundig Tharus flat TV screen which shows the eight stereo views simultaneously projected in different directions in such a way that the eye will catch them all. The result is HD TV in 3D. And flat TV will be so... well flat!
